Austin & Circuit of the Americas a Finalist for Summer X Games

Austin just keeps growing with so much to do.  What do you think about all of this?

Three-year contract would begin in 2014

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Austin and the Circuit of the Americas were named as one of four finalist to host ESPN’s Summer X Games beginning in 2014.

The games are looking for a new home after spending more than 10 years in and around downtown Los Angeles.

Other cities in the running to earn a three-year contract to host the North American summer stop on the tour include Chicago, Detroit and Charlotte, N.C.

According to ESPN, the X Games began taking bids from cities hoping to host the games last October. A contract between the X Games and AEG is set to expire following the 2013 games in Los Angeles after an agreement to extend the contract could not be reached.

COTA said Austin was selected as finalist after months of competition via site visits by representatives of the X Games and an intensive application process.

The track would be used as the primary site for the competition. Officials said the on-site infrastructure, including an amphitheater and a large amount of space to stage a variety of competitions, made the venue well-suited for the games.

“This is fantastic news for Austin and Circuit of The Americas,” said Paul Thornton, leader of the effort on behalf of Austin extreme sports fans and COTA. “Bringing the X Games to Austin would mean a significant economic impact for our community, bringing fans, competitors and media representatives from around the world to our hometown, while once again putting Austin in the international spotlight.”

ESPN will next schedule site visits to the four cities on the list of finalists, with a visit to Austin anticipated the week of June 3-7.

The new host city is expected to be announced this summer.
